Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2008 (Jean Paul Thévenet) – A wine from France

Solms AmalieWhen it comes to open a bottle of red wine, most of the time you think twice before opening a Beaujolais. Before discussing the quality of the vintage or the work of this specific winemaker, you have to explain that there are some different crus in this region, that not all Beaujolais is Beaujolais Nouveau and that in some part of this region, Beaujolais can age. When you said that, people start looking at you like if you were coming from another planet and come back to you: A beaujolais wine can age? Yes it can age and the Cru Morgon is a nice example of a wine which has a good ageing potential. Then you pour their glass with this light colour Gamay wine and start to explain that the winemaker, Jean-Paul Thévenet, is among Beaujolais’ vignerons who believe wine should be produced in the traditional way. And then the wine talks by itself: soft and round tannins, raspberry and earthy notes, with a lovely acidity. Another glass?
