Sicily: A promising vintage for red and white wines at Gulfi

Sicily: A promising vintage for red and white wines at Gulfi

Giampaolo Motta

First indications from Cantina Gulfi, the Azienda Agricola which created the grand crus in Sicily (NeroMaccarj, Nerobufaleffj, Nerosanlore, Nerobaronj) may indicate the 2010 vintage is a great vintage in this part of Europe. “On september 7th, we already picked some white grapes including Caricanti” said Vito Catania, the owner of this organic wine estate. “Up to now, we had perfect conditions, it rained much during the winter and then, from june to end of august, a lovely sunny weather with reasonable temperature. We may start harvesting our grand crus in the third week of september. Grapes are beautiful, ripe, and maturity went well with cool weather (even sometimes a bit cold) over a longer period than last year (1 week later). Regarding Resecca, our wine made with 100 years old vines planted on Etna, it is too early to talk about the harvest even if the grapes are developping very well. Maybe October 10th, but let’s see up to this time…”
