Giampaolo Motta, La Massa: “2010 vintage was like a custom made Armani suit”

An exclusive interview with Giampaolo Motta about the Vintage 2010 at the tuscan wine estate La Massa.

What do you think of the 2010 vintage?

2010 is a benchmark for us when you consider human intervention. It was like a chess game with nature. Why? Because, first of all, we experienced one of the highest rainfall levels in the last 20 years. It was very beneficial for us because our soils are very well drained, with good aeration and a great structure. This is partly due to the nature of the soils here in Panzano at La Massa but also testimony that the conscientious work that we have done over the last 10 years to revitalize, aerate and re-structure the soils has been beneficial. Our diligent and daily efforts show terrific results. A very precise, attentive and respectful management of the soils and vines gave us a unique advantage in 2010. Secondly, the vegetative cycle was just right, without any pauses in its development, which is quite exceptional. Crop thinning at the right time insured good ripening and resulted in smaller yields. Photosynthesis was perfect which is another key point in 2010. And thirdly, we harvested magnificent ripe grapes (from some parcels alcohol degrees were over 14-14.5°), with beautiful acidity and a strong tannic structure. All this will guarantee a very high quality for our wines.

How would you characterize this 2010 vintage?

The wines which are blended into Giorgio Primo come from 3 major “terroir families”. Merlot 2010 came mostly from the cooler – meaning higher altitude- temperatures. They reached a very high level of phenolic maturity and kept an exceptional expression of fresh fruits. They will play their role perfectly in giving fattiness and roundness together with an important tannic structure. In 2010, Cabernet sauvignon, which usually contributes depth and a long finish to the blend, reached a perfect ripeness and will bring a rare aromatic expression. This is mostly due to a significant reduction of the yield decided before the summer. The Petit verdot 2010 is playing its usual role; to reinforce the mid-palate and bring spices and colour. In 2010, Petit verdot has an even stronger expression of spices and a deeper colour than in past vintages. Blending in a very small percentage to the final blend makes the taste of the wine very unique.

How would you compare Giorgio Primo 2009 which is still ageing in your historic cellars and Giorgio Primo 2010 ?

Both are vintages that reached a very high level of excellence but for very different reasons. This is what gives me such passion: terroirs that have different behaviours every year. In 2009 was a harvest « in a bathing suit ». It was precocious and we had to control the huge risk of over ripeness. The 2009 vintage shows opulent wines with a lower level of acidity than 2010 and an impressive depth. The 2010 vintage was like a « custom made Armani suit » – classic and elegant. We had to be precise with timing of picking and selection. We have wines with a more important acidity, which could be defined as classic with a lovely freshness and a great ageing potential.”
