Sicilian Azienda Gulfi honored " Best Italian Wine Estate for the Year 2012 "

After receiving 95 points from Robert Parker for the 2005 NeroSanlore ("Gulfi is one of my favorite producers of fine Nero d'Avola") and getting the highest scores in prestigious wine guides such as Gambero Rosso (3 Bicchiere) and Guida Vini dell' espresso (Eccellenza), Gulfi has just been honored "Best Italian Wine Estate for the Year 2012" by Ian Domenico D'Agata and Massimo Claudio Comparini in their guide "ITALY’S BEST WINES 2012". Wine experts D'agata (Decanter, Tanzer...) and Comparini (Cucina e Vini...) have chosen Gulfi - based in Sicily, in Chiaramonte Gulfi - among a selection of the best renowned wineries in Italy.

Ian Domenico D'Agata and Massimo Claudio Comparini wrote: "Lots of good wines from Gulfi this year again. Above all Nerobufaleffj, a great wine at an international level although it can not taste more local than it does. A great Nero d'Avola, powerful, refined, very balanced, that benefitted from some ageing in bottle. Congratulations to all the Catania family and also to the oenologist Salvo Foti who is highly regarded internationally for his work in Sicily. A splendid Rossojbleo which costs very little and reminds us of a great Burgundy. Also do not miss the opportunity to taste Reseca and Cerasuolo. Magnificent! A truly deserved award."

During Merano Wine Festival, Vito Catania, owner of Azienda Gulfi commented: "Since 1996, we have been making the wines we love at Gulfi. We never accepted irrigation, we always have considered the best practices of other organic and biodynamic environments. We went our own way like the best wine estates have done in differents parts of the world. Of course we are influenced by the most delicate burgundy wines as well as by the greatest Rhone Valley wines, particularly Chateauneuf du Pape, but our wines have first of all a taste of their true origins, of their deep sicilian roots."

Taking the control of the family wine estate in 1996, Vito Catania created the four Sicilian crus which made the international reputation of the Azienda Gulfi: NeroBufaleffj, NeroMaccarj, NeroSanlorè, NeroBaronj. He has expanded the land area he inherited and introduced innovative working practices. In collaboration with the oenologist Salvo Foti, he is making organic wines from a 70 hectares estate vineyard planted in the best parts of eastern Sicily. Every year, Gulfi also makes a very limited production of white wines (Carjcantj) as well as a 100% Nerello Mascalese wine from the Etna (Reseca).
